If you regularly work with teams, you’ve probably noticed: when you ask what they need to deliver more value, the answer is often the same: “We need more people.”<\/em> This seems like a logical solution because more hands means more work, right? But is that really the most effective way to create more value? I doubt it is. Let’s look at alternative approaches to maximizing value without expanding the team or increasing the budget. <\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

1. Process optimization: faster by streamlining<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Many teams work with processes that have become complex over the years. This often leads to delays and waste. By examining current practices and seeing where bottlenecks exist, you streamline processes and increase efficiency. Consider shortening feedback loops, reducing handovers and eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy. Lean methodologies help with this by identifying and eliminating waste so that teams get more done in less time. For this, the Agile mindset is paramount. So first, determine what principles you think are important to organize on and find a methodology to go with it that gives hands and feet to that principle. <\/p>\n\n

2. Focus and priorities: delivering value above all else<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Teams that want to do too much at once often lose focus. This results in lower output and a reduced ability to make an impact. By working on strong backlog prioritization, you help teams focus on the most valuable tasks. This means they spend their time better and the organization sees results from the work faster. Focus on what really matters and leave out anything that doesn’t directly contribute to business goals. This takes courage and honest conversation. Saying ‘No’ is often not so easy. It is easier to say ‘Yes’ to everything. In principle, this results in faster friendships, but over time, when there is no delivery, the friendship can quickly cool down. You avoid that by prioritizing honestly. <\/p>\n\n

3. Empowerment and autonomy: strengthen your team<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Teams that feel in control of their work tend to be more motivated and productive. Empowerment is about giving teams autonomy to make their own decisions about how they approach their work. When teams are given the confidence to optimize their practices, they find innovative and efficient ways to deliver more value without the need for additional resources. What does this require? A culture of trust and the space to experiment. As a leader, you play a big role in this by creating a climate for teams to continuously improve themselves. Challenge teams to organize themselves differently and inspire them with exemplary behavior. <\/p>\n\n

4. Automation: efficiency through technology<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Automation is one of the most effective ways to do more with less. Especially repetitive manual operations are identified as a form of waste. The time spent on those would rather be spent on new things that add value. Yet we often see that keeping ramshackle, outdated systems up and running consumes a lot of teams’ time and resources. And that’s a waste. The right tools unburden teams, allowing them to get their work done faster and with fewer errors. This allows them to focus on tasks that deliver real value. <\/p>\n\n

5. Continuous improvement: small steps, big impact<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

A culture where teams strive to improve every day is key to creating value. It’s all about those small, daily steps that add up to a huge impact. Kaizen<\/a>, from the Lean philosophy, shows that when every employee thinks daily about how processes can be improved, you make teams more and more efficient without needing extra people. As a leader, you naturally set a good example in this by regularly scrutinizing and improving yourself as well. <\/p>\n\n

6. Collaboration and communication: strengthen interaction<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Strong collaboration and crystal clear communication are the gamechangers<\/em> if you want to deliver value. Too often we lose precious value due to poor communication, silo thinking, or simply because teams are not on the same page. A shame. And preventable. Invest in powerful collaboration tools, ensure regular alignment, and radically break down those silos<\/a>. Only then will teams work together like a well-oiled machine and deliver the value that propels the organization forward. <\/p>\n\n
