Overrated! by Scrum Academy\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F763229275&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>&#8220;It is good enough as it is now and the mutual cooperation is fine.&#8221;<\/em><\/h4>\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently I coached a team with exactly that look. And then it is exactly that aura that triggers. Because when you speak to the individual team members, different messages emerge. One is looking for movement, another wants change and number three is full of new ideas. Yet it is not discussed. Anything to keep the sweet peace. The harmonious harmony.      &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/en\/training\/scrum-master-training\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scrum Masters<\/a> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/en\/training\/agile-coach-training\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile Coaches <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, please recognize the:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; teams that perform on the surface and where you get to your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sense that they can achieve more? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; team members who neither recognize the potential nor want to put energy into it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; managers who say the team is strong and it&#8217;s best to leave team members alone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably just nodded &#8216;yes&#8217; three times. Maybe not even that crazy. And maybe those teams and managers are right. What&#8217;s wrong with getting some work done in harmony? More than you think. Harmony creates     <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two gi-gan-tic thresholds.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2><b>  Conformity as a sleep inducer<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want all the space for ideas! Eccentric, colorful, otherworldly, groundbreaking &#8230; they only arise when it is permitted to adopt different and new perspectives. Professor Hackman, a specialist in team research, advises that a    <\/span><b><i>deviant<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  to have on the team. An eccentric, non-conformist, someone who goes against the norm and almost pulls the door out of its rebates to welcome original ideas. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, you want team members who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40535656\/your-team-members-need-to-disagree-more-heres-how-to-help-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disagree with each other more often<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  and have the courage to express it. When a team is able to discuss disagreements in a respectful manner, team members feel more connected, effective and intellectually stimulated. Productive and    <\/span><b>constructive conflicts  <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead to more ideas and perspectives. Without friction no shine and without sparks no fire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a Scrum Master, after <a href=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/en\/training\/scrum-master-training\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scrum Master training<\/a>, or Team Leader <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90244612\/introducing-discomfort-is-effective-for-team-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;ll cause a bit of a stir from time to time.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also in a well-working and sociable team. Make it a little uncomfortable sometimes, introduce a   <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stretch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Find a  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deviant  <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and encourage him or her to suggest contrarian ideas. Most people find a   <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  secretly very fun and, on the contrary, fall asleep slowly when doing the same thing forever. Sounds recognizable right? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/en\/trainingen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6308\" src=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Agile-Scrum-banner-300x75.jpg\" alt=\"Agile Scrum banner\" width=\"508\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Agile-Scrum-banner-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Agile-Scrum-banner-768x192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Agile-Scrum-banner-318x80.jpg 318w, https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Agile-Scrum-banner.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2><b>  Always working together is counterproductive<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/wanda-thibodeaux\/intermittent-collaboration-beats-constantly-working-together-study-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  shows that structurally collaborative teams perform worse than individuals who occasionally put their heads together but mainly work alone. So within your team, make sure you have   <\/span><b>space and autonomy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Trust everyone to do their best work and meet when it is really necessary. Of course, sometimes a task is too complex and there are many uncertainties. Then you creep closer together. It&#8217;s really a matter of tuning in and finding the (right) balance.   &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaboration can hinder progress: creativity diminishes, new solutions are quickly shot down, and individual voices are stifled. I have experienced a number of teams that have each   <\/span><b>wanted to solve problem jointly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Discussions, little action and point blank no solution. They would have been better off with a less collaborative attitude and less striving for consensus and conformity. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get rid of conformity. Nurture individuals. <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we all have to play first fiddle now? Certainly not. Teams are valuable. But I believe we sometimes go overboard in emphasizing that team spirit and the &#8220;togetherness. Teams perform better when the individuals on the team are allowed to be themselves, and therefore different. When they learn to have conflict in a productive way. When the occasional false note is blown. In short, provide some disagreement in harmony once in a while, too.       <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you create an environment where teams can have conflict in a healthy way?&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you provide a foundation of psychological safety? Help teams break through conformity so that contrarian ideas surface? &nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come to our <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/en\/training\/agile-coach-training\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile Coach Training<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and learn, along with other Agile Coaches in training, how to effectively take your team to the next level. <\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harmony, there&#8217;s music in that. At least if you&#8217;re talking about the local marching band. But does that same word also create the right tones within your team or company? Or do you just need to shake things up sometimes?
