How do you scrum a T-Rex?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size intro\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Naturalis&#8217; Educational Development Department was created in 2014 from the merger of two departments: <em>Education<\/em> and <em>Information Services<\/em>. All the activities Naturalis offers to students and families thus came to live under one roof. Just in time, because major innovations were coming. In 2016, the T-Rex (named Trix) would arrive and in 2019 the new museum would open. The department was looking for a way to work efficiently, like Scrum, without losing creativity.      <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Best Practices Approach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>To begin, there was a training session for the entire team. Energy was high everyone was ready to start. At the same time, there was a rushed feeling. How was that? Because there was also ad hoc work being done for other teams and departments. We reduced those tasks in collaboration and put the focus on days working on education around Trix. We removed all unnecessary <em>fluff<\/em> and noise. Focus! A good first step.        <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Rhythm and Sprints<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Working in a set rhythm with (partial) deliverables also took some getting used to. A 6-week period consisted of 3 <a href=\"https:\/\/scrumacademy.nl\/en\/blog\/scrum-sprint-review-de-complete-uitleg\/\">sprints<\/a>:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 weeks Design &amp; Concept, testing with target audience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 weeks Elaboration of Design and Concept, demo with end users<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 week Reviews, process feedback<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 week Rest week, final touches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>After each sprint, the next batch of <em>stakeholders<\/em> was already at the door to test proptypes. Think parents, children, teachers, elementary schools. Explicitly, the <em>review<\/em> was now the moment to learn and improve which part of the educational activity and to implement those improvements immediately. This in turn gave peace of mind towards the official opening, as products were completely finished, and not left hanging endlessly.     <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;The creativity of the team to use Agile and Scrum to their liking is tremendous. As a result, the form of collaboration fit seamlessly into the world of all the team members at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalis.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naturalis<\/a>. For example, having 1 yoke of a scrum board where team 1 worked from left to right on it and team 2 worked from right to left. This provided additional connection among the teams and very quick switching to align each other&#8217;s ideas and tasks.&#8221;   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concrete result:  <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ready in time for Trix and the opening, thanks to Scrum and Agile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Validated and tested exhibition with real users<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transparent team collaboration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Partial deliveries made the team&#8217;s work very transparent to the rest of the organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Naturalis&#8217; Educational Development Department was created in 2014 from the merger of two departments: Education and Information Services.
